Starr was not being heavily recruited until his performance at this summer’s Nike camp on the Kansas State campus, in which he turned in a 4.94 time in the 40-yard dash. He was an honorable-mention all-state pick according to the Topeka Capital Journal. Starr placed third at the Kansas 4A state wrestling championships this past spring.
