Comments from Sonny Lubick on Letter of Intent Day in Fort Collins...
"I feel good about this recruiting class. This year we did some different. We always ha a couple of coaches in the office, scrutinizing every tape we got in, evaluating, and we had one consensus on every player. It worked a lot smoother. Hopefully, we got the right guys."
"The last few years, it seems like if we can get a player to campus, we have a good shot. The city sells itself, the university sells itself. The faculty and staff do a great job supporting us."
"Prior to Christmas, we already had 10 or 12 commitments. We got the rest after Christmas."
"What excites me about this class is that we have a nix mix, a balance of in-state and out-of-state players. We have 10 from in the state of Colorado. We feel good with the in-state skilled players."
"We have three quarterback we'll give an opportunity. Two of the three look like they could play other positions. We helped ourselves with that need (quarterback)."
"We signed 11 on offense, 11 on defense, and a couple who can go either way. Same with the big guys. We have some flexibility."
"We always like to get speed, but it has to be football players' speed. I think we helped ourselves down the road. With speed you can play a couple of positions."
On recruiting two Fort Collins High products
"What those kids did at Fort Collins High School did - winning 12 games and going deep into the playoffs - that was exceptional. We're happy to have them."
"Zach Donaldson...His dad was a good player. He's the type of guy we like. He doesn't say much; he just plays. He's a tough guy, a sharp guy, who knows what it takes to play college football. He'll come up and hit you."
"You put Matt Yemm's tape on there, and he did a lot of things. He does it all."
"We're excited. We love to get those city kids. It says a lot for our program.
On Luke Diehl
"He was one of our first commitments. He wanted to come to CSU.
On Signing 10 Instate Players
"It seems like every year, there are probably in state about 30 Division I prospects. This year was a chance for us to grab some good ones. We had to find a way to make room, to go after them."
On recruiting two junior college linebackers
"That was one immediate need. We had to come up with a couple of linebackers. We were lacking depth in that area. We have two starters and a couple of other guys coming back. But the addition of John Clark and Curtis Cornelson are two linebackers who can help us."
On Klay Kubiak
"His eyes light up when you start talking football. Everything is in front of him in football."
On freshmen playing early
"We need some help in the secondary, because we have a lot of juniors and seniors. One or two could end up helping us early in the secondary. A guy like Zach Donaldson or Elijah Blu Smith could help us."
