2003 Awards and Rankings: Top 65 Rankings

2003 Rankings

Drum roll please. The moment we've all been waiting for is here. Your 2003 Top 65 is unveiled below. We'll start by counting backwards, from 25 to 1, and we'll follow up with the remaining 26 through 65, as well as our Honorable Mention list.

25. RAM SMITH--While RAM SMITH'S constant obsession with CU sometimes becomes a deterrent to his value-add to the website, he does have his good moments. Take for instance, his Day in the Life series, which he has chronicled (in jest) such figures' lives as Gary Barnett, Rick Neuheisel, and even CU poster "le alpe d huez" who he affectionately calls "Poopy". RAM SMITH doesn't bring an intense amount of content to the board, but he can provide comic relief quite often. Every now and then, he'll drop a one-liner that will have you rolling. With number of posts (he's one of the most consistent posters), and sheer comedy, RS has entered the Top 25 this year.

24. Dall Ram--Taking the No. 24 spot may be a bit of a disappointment for such a RamNation legend, as he placed runner-up in 2002, and No. 3 in 2001. But, it's been a rocky year for Dall. It started when he shocked the message board community with a retirement announcement earlier this year. RamNationers always got the sense he would be back, and he definitely came back. It appeared he just needed to take a little time off, to regain his creative juices, and love for the Nation. He came back strong, finding his old form and writing numerous gut-busting posts. As a king of the one-liners and quick-hitters, Dall earned our Funniest Poster award this year. But in the end, his hiatus, and decreased posting have cost him his three-year run in the Top 5 (which includes one year in the Top 5 of the CSU Ramblings rankings).

23. #11fan--For the second straight year, a CU fan has earned a spot in our Top 25. Last year, Buffsin2002 (now posting as Buffsin2003) landed at No. 23. Granted, #11fan should probably have an asterisk next to his name as a Buff fan, considering he is also a true supporter of CSU quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt, who he is long-time friends with. As a close buddy of Van Pelt, #11fan brings knowledge (albeit maybe a tad biased) about the CSU starting QB that no one else on the board can provide. He also is extremely knowledgeable about the game of football, and as an outsider can provide objective viewpoints of the CSU football program. He can often be seen debating quarterbacking issues with Brother of Future, who as the brother of backup quarterback Justin Holland, who obviously has his own biases, which makes for entertaining arguments.

22. Green & Gold--Recently, a relatively new poster, under the username "greenandgold44" questioned who had been on RamNation longer, he or "Green & Gold". It's not even close. You'd be hard-pressed to find too many Ram fans who have been at RamNation longer than G&G. In fact, he was around in the pre-RamNation days, when all there was was the obscure CSU Ramblings board. That's what makes this year's No. 22 ranking so special. It marks G&G's first appearance in the Top 25 after two years of being on the outside looking in, in the mid-30s. G&G isn't real flashy, but he grinds it out just about every day. He is even-keel, but can have an edgy side to him if provoked by a Buff fan. He's knowledgeable, particularly in football, and is valuable in football-related conversations. He's also an educated Mountain West Conference fan, and loves to discuss conference-related issues as well. G&G is a great link-finder, and often finds online stories to share with the rest of us fans. It's been a long time coming for G&G, but he finally (and deservedly) cracked the Top 25.

21. 80sramfan--Never one to mince words, or hide his disdain for the University of Colorado, 80sramfan has a unique style--one of vengeance and hate. This year's winner of the "He Hate Buff" Award has earned it with his constant berating of CU and its fans. However, that's not why he's received such a lofty ranking in our poll. But rather, it's his propensity for creating controversy on the board. He has created quite a stir with several of his "scoops". Some have turned out to be true, and some have turned out to be false (who can forget the claim that fighter jets were being scrambled over Denver? Certainly not CU fans, who remind him of it almost daily). Either way, like him or hate him, he creates good traffic and conversation on the website.

20. CAMotion--On one of the most exciting days in CSU history, CAMotion stepped up his game. It was the day that Pat Stryker and the Bohemian Foundation donated $15.1 million to the football program. The press conference was broadcast on local radio, which obviously is of no benefit to out-of-staters. However, CAMotion spent the entire press conference (probably 20 minutes long) typing furiously to post messages and keep Ram fans abreast of what was being said on the radio. He has proven his worth off the board too. Giving RamMan a much-needed respite from the fundraising sector, CAMotion organized the most recent RamNation fundraiser to give gifts to the CSU basketball coaches. He established the fund, collected the money, and researched and bought the gifts that we, as a RamNation community, gave to the basketball coaches. To top it off, CAMotion is a solid poster on the board, bringing valued opinions and topics on a consistent basis.

19. CState--A young pup by RamNation standards, CState is a recent CSU graduate who first started posting as a student two years ago. He was valuable then, and continues to mature into a major contributor to the board. With this year's impressive performance, he's vaulted into the Top 25 after impressively earning No. 43 last year. As the youngest member of our Top 25, CState provides a unique perspective and brings quality arguments, discussions, ideas, and insights.

18. BluH2OBaboonFarm--Baboon, who was on the outskirts of the Top 25 (finished No. 30) in 2002, cracked it this year. He's the king of non-topics, which often include takes on soccer, rock music, golf, talk radio, and more. But, he also knows and loves his Rams. He doesn't often go with the consensus agreement on issues, which is refreshing, and he brings quality opinions to the board. You'll find him posting on a near-daily basis.

17. Ram_Buck--Ram_Buck makes his third consecutive appearance in the Top 25, although this year's ranking was in question due to his brief "retirement" from RamNation. He had gotten fed up with some of the shenanigans that came about during an argument he had with fellow Ram fans on an issue, and decided to bail out--permanently. Thankfully, it turned out to only be a temporary departure, as he returned a couple months later. You had to be happy this year for Ram_Buck, who gets derives his name from his love for CSU and The Ohio State University, as his beloved Buckeyes won the national championship. But, showing where his truest colors lie, he spent many of his days surrounding that championship on the RamNation board…not the O-Zone board. Ram_Buck is a well-rounded poster, and quite possibly the board's biggest women's sports fan. He brings knowledge, particularly in women's basketball, but is also valuable in conversations about men's hoops, and also brings a lot to the table during football season.

16. dRAMve--Some of you may be wondering how dRAMve is so high. Well, you have to look beyond the past couple of months, as he was a major force on the message board earlier in the year, particularly during football and basketball season. While his posting frequency has fallen off during the offseason, we didn't feel it was enough to dock him credit considering the value he brought to the board for 75 percent of the year. dRAMve is one of the more reasonable, knowledgeable, and credible posters on the board. He is the type who likes to engage in arguments, and backs up his opinions with facts. He's also what we like to call a "thread-starter", as his posts often result in long, well-debated subjects.

15. SMARUSCOG--SMOG is sort of the antithesis of dRAMve. While both are terrific posters, SMOG is much more of a two-bit, meaning he likes to jump into conversations rather than start them. Regardless of his posting preferences, SMOG has been one of the most active posters on the board this year. His posting numbers have significantly increased this year, demonstrating a clear sign that he on a mission to make the Top 25 list this year, following No. 46 finish last year. One thing we like about SMOG is that he is always quick to provide an answer to a dangling question on the board…you know how you feel bad for people who post a question on the board that nobody takes the time to answer? Well, SMOG is one of the first guys to reply to someone like that…even if he has to supply an incorrect answer. ;) In all, RamNation's resident tape trader has developed into one of the site's best posters.

14. Horn Star--Horn Star showed his steady ways again this year, making the list for the third year in a row. He's not flashy, but is a solid poster all around. He's the-type of poster who typically treats everyone with respect, rarely involves himself in flame wars, and usually just goes with the flow. He did find himself in a little controversy earlier this year when Governor Bill Owens "nominated" Mark Holtzman as a presidential candidate to replace Dr. Yates. The nomination tainted the president search process, and a lot of Ram fans were bitter about it. However, Horn Star, employed in a political job at the time, backed Owens, which sparked some good arguments.

13. RambleOn--Bowing out as the official RamNation recruiting guru did not mean RambleOn bowed out as one of the site's best posters. Despite enrolling in graduate school, which has significantly decreased his Internet surfing time, RambleOn still kept his presence known on the message board--and then some. Despite turning over the recruiting page responsibilities to Tweeter, RambleOn still keeps his eye on the recruiting scene and shares his thoughts, insights, and scoops as he can. He keeps us up to date with new prospects, and what various recruiting publications are saying about CSU and current prospects. He is also a very knowledgeable football fan, and brings considerable value to daily conversations.

12. SFBayCAM--SFBayCAM, who first accessed RamNation back in September 2002, was under consideration for the Newcomer of the Year Award, being edged out by only BVP for Heisman 03, who also happened to turn in a Top-5 performance in his rookie year. SFBayCam did earn the Glass Half Full Award, for being such a positive influence on the site, and always seemingly looking on the bright side of things. And that's part of the reason for his lofty ranking overall this year. Despite living in San Francisco, he is amazingly in touch with what is going on in Fort Collins. His opinions and ideas are always valued, and one year's time has developed into one of the most valuable posters we have on this board.

11. Doc--Doc is a top contributor to the message board, bringing words of wisdom on all topics. He has been a consistent performer, as evidenced by his No. 8 ranking in 2002 and No. 16 finish in 2001. He has proven to be a credible, opinionated poster, who backs up his opinions and arguments with facts. What else would you expect from RamNation's resident doctor? He's also well-rounded, as he not only specializes in football and men's basketball, but also closely follows women's sports as well. Doc is also a constant, as you can find him posting just about every day. That's a good thing, because his posts are usually some of the most worthwhile to read.

10. Newport Coast Ram--We at RamNation were not aware of any place called Newport Coast, but that's apparently where this poster (formerly known as WashParkRam) has moved this year. Whether located in Denver's Washington Park or California's Newport Beach, this guy's shtick can be seen from a mile away. While he's a very knowledgeable and opinionated poster, his claim to fame is talking smack with fans from "ucb". But, it's the demeanor of his posts that are enjoyable. He never flies off the handle, but rather gets under Buff fans' skin with snide, witty, funny remarks. But even without the brownie points for buff bashing, NCR would still be one of the best posters we have. After cracking the Top 10 in the two previous years, NCR fell off the pace a bit…but still turned in a solid year, despite enduring a move to the Left Coast.

9. Brother of Future--Considering that BOF basically hibernates during the non-football months (he posts, but not near as frequently during football season), it's impressive that he still cracks the Top 25, much less the Top 10. Last year, BOF was amazing, reeling in a No. 4 ranking, but fell a bit this year due to decreased posting. As most know, Brother of Future's username comes from the fact that he is the older brother of sophomore quarterback Justin Holland. It won't be long until Brother of Future will have to change his name to Brother of Present. During football season, it's tough to find anyone more valuable than he is, with his in-depth knowledge of football, and inside perspective through his brother. He never shies away from controversial view points and can often be seen arguing with #11 fan, who is a long-time friend of Bradlee Van Pelt and family. This is BOF's third straight Top-25 finish.

8. RamMan--Despite suffering a bit of a fall on the charts this year, RamMan is still one of the better posters around. He finished No. 4 in 2001 and No. 6 in 2002, but was docked some votes this year simply due to the fact that his posting frequency went way down. Running a start-up company will do that to you. RamMan is a deeper poster, who tends to ignore the daily smack talk and other surface-level conversations, instead choosing to discuss things like fan support, marketing, conference affiliation, etc. (This is true in all instances except for when the topic of 80s music comes up…then RamMan is all over those threads.) He's one of RamNation's charter members, and his influence on the site can be seen in several areas…one being the RamStorming Board, which was all his idea. RamMan also is the Renaissance man for RamNation fundraising. He organized the first-ever RamNation fundraisers, setting up funds, collecting money, and buying the gifts that we, as a RamNation community, collectively have given to the CSU football coaches.

7. Tweeter--Tweeter came onto the scene last year, out of nowhere, with a No. 19 ranking. He soon became known as one of RamNation's recruiting gurus. He filled in nicely this year for RambleOn as the website's recruiting expert. When RambleOn enrolled in graduate school, he thus had to relinquish some of his time-consuming duties as the go-to source for recruiting information. Tweeter made the smooth transition, and provides a valuable service to Ram fans with his football prospect database, and regular updates on the message board. He has a keen inside knowledge of the football program, and is an incredible resource for all of us. In addition to his recruiting expertise, Tweeter also knows the game of football inside and out and has been contributor throughout the year.

6. GoDuke--GoDuke not only survived his first year in RamNation…but he also became one of the top rookies on the board. He registered as a poster last summer, and came on strong, particularly during basketball season. He is not a CSU alumnus, but as a Fort Collins resident, has a fond place in his heart for the Rams. His objective viewpoints, and knowledge of the game of basketball made his posts invaluable during the 2002 basketball season. And, when he and his son braved the blizzard to drive to Salt Lake City to watch his two beloved teams play in the NCAA basketball tournament, he only solidified his place in Ram fans' hearts.

5. JoninLA (now JoninAZ)-- Despite a change of hometowns (he moved from California to Arizona this year), Jon was able to keep his focus and remain a top player in RamNation. Due to his eloquent writing abilities and thought-provoking posts, Jon will always be a top competitor for a high ranking in these awards. He has proven to be the best writer RamNation has to offer. He is the two-time winner of the Post of the Year Award (we did not have that award in 2001), and this year's post of the year shows how versatile he really is. In 2001, he won the award with a brilliant, tear-jerking epilogue about September 11. This year, he won with a knee-slapping parody of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, with words being altered to reflect our appreciation to Pat Stryker/Bohemian Foundation's $15.1 million donation to the football program. Los Angeles, Phoenix….it doesn't matter. Jon will continue to win awards no matter where he's located.

4. Stalwart Ram--Our reigning champion has been a stalwart member of the RamNation Awards and Rankings. He fell a little off the pace this year from last year's top-ranking performance, but still, he's a guy that when you see his handle, you click his posts. His posts are always must-reads, and carries as much clout and credibility as anybody on the board. He's a legend in RamNation circles, having been here from its infant days. Stalwart has finished in the Top 5 in all three years of the contest history (champion last year, runner-up in 2001). Even in the pre-RamNation days, he was a Top 5 finisher in our CSU Ramblings website rankings. However, with RAM-I-AM's decrease in posts this year, Stalwart saw the perfect opportunity to take the top spot and seized it. Annually one of the top Anti-Buff posters, you can always count on Stalwart to thwart Buffs, with a combination of both his smarts and humor. He was the creator of the commonly used term "ucb" that Buff fans have come to hate. Despite being one of the most comedic posters on the board Stalwart can debate with any poster on any topic. He's also what we like to call a "Re:" poster, as the majority of his posts are responses to others. He just can't seem to let any post without weighing in with his own viewpoint. His overall creativity, intelligence, and daily contributions are what put Stalwart in the No. 1 position. He has established himself as one of, if not the best, poster this website has ever seen.

3. BVP for Heisman 03--BVP for Heisman 03 is was new to the board this year, and really came on strong. He's known for his love for Bradlee Van Pelt (or "Mad Max") as BVP4H03 likes to call him, as he's commonly spouting BVP statistics and reasons for a huge senior season and pending Heisman Trophy run. But, he's also proven extremely knowledgeable of CSU athletics in general, and contributes regularly on topics of all sorts. Sometimes I wonder if he's too smart for the board, because it's hard to keep up with his arguments, theories, and ideas. He is also a very creative writer. His "Day in the Life of a Trustfundaloe" and subsequent "Day in the Life" posts were considered for Post of the Year. And there's plenty of quantity to go along with his quality. If you log into RamNation, you'll typically find BVP4H03 posting away on a daily basis. And, we can't forget his daily efforts in the fight against Buff fans. BVP4H03 is constantly mixing it up with Buff fans, and always holding his own. BVP4H03 has also forever left his imprint on this site, by encouraging RamNation staff to create an "Off-Topic Board", which we did. It's now the place where you can find smut and other unimportant items. ;) His No. 3 ranking is the highest ranking ever achieved by a Rookie, besting "Babybull's" No. 5 finish in his debut year in 2001.

2. JoeybtheAD--Joey has been a visitor to RamNation for a couple years, but it wasn't until this year that he made his presence known. And he did so with authority. His harsh East Coast style of wit and opinions initially seemed to rub RamNationers the wrong way. But, he slowly turned many into JBAD fans. No one else on the board can provoke conversation and long threads the way he can. Fort Freak Geek's post from a couple weeks ago summed up Joey's value to the board: "Tell JoeyB to pedal faster…Ramnation is SLO-O-O-O-OW this morning!" He's a spark plug for conversations. In addition, Joey's poll questions (posted on a near-daily basis during the season) are often amusing and interesting. And he also has a newfound source close to the athletic department, which has enabled him to give quality insights into the program. Joey has gone through three names this year, starting as JoeyB, then JoeyBtheAD, then JoeyBtherealAD (following Jeff Hathaway's departure). No matter what he's known as, and no matter whether you love him or hate him, he's become one of the most valuable posters on RamNation. Even former athletic director Jeff Hathaway endorsed Joey as the board's MVP.

1. WhammyRammy--Conquering perhaps the greatest climb ever in our RamNation awards, WhammyRammy has gone from nobody to Top Dog in 2003. He was a regular poster all throughout 2002, yet he did not even crack the Top 65 last year. This year, through persistence, and a barrage of daily posts (he is without a doubt the most active poster on the board, averaging 17 posts/day), he has climbed to the top. I don't know where he finds the time…but I'd like to be in his line of work. ;) Whammy is always even-keel. He's rarely controversial, usually funny, and always thought-provoking. With a combination of number of posts and quality content, Whammy has earned RamNation legend status in one year's worth of hard work. His No. 1 ranking goes to show that taking the top spot doesn't require inside sources, lengthy diatribes, poetic prose, or constant clever smack talk. It's more about dedication, stick-to-it-tiveness, and spending your days and nights proclaiming the gospel of the Rams. He has a special way of sparking quality conversations, informing fans of issues, encouraging fellow Rams to buy season tickets and join the Ram Club, and smacking Buff fans without going over the line. He established the "Guess the Season Ticket Total" contest this year, and also is founding father of the BVP Headspike Video, which he is requested to re-post on a near-daily basis. He's a well-rounded poster and turned in a flawless performance this year. In the upset of all upsets, Whammy, just an average Joe who has now reached the big-time, is your 2003 RamNation Champ. Congratulations Whammy…well done.

To honor our Top 25 members for the year, we have christened each with a special icon that will appear next to each poster's handle on the message board. This icon, which features a Ram's horn connected to the number 25, will signal to the RamNation community that this particular poster earned residency in the Top 25 for the year. Each Top 25 member will keep this icon for the year until the 2004 awards are released. At that point, the slate will be wiped clean, and only the top 25 posters for 2004 will receive the honorary icon. Congratulations, you've earned it.

Our top-ranked poster, WhammyRammy, we gets an even more prestigious icon. This icon, which features a Ram's horn connected the number 1, will appear next to his handle every time he posts, symbolizing his status as King Ram. He will keep this honorary status symbol until the 2004 rankings are released.

Now, onto the next group. Even though these people do not receive any sort of special icon to garner public recognition, they still had a quality year to finish ranked in the Top 65. Here are the next best 40 posters, ranked in order of most votes.

Honorable Mention

Lastly, here is our Honorable Mention list. The people on this list are solid posters. Each of them may have been great at times during the year, but maybe didn't sustain consistent posting quality or quantity to garner Top 65 status. Regardless, the people on this list have, at a minimum, made an impression on the Awards and Rankings committee, and thus deserved recognition. This list does not reflect a particular order of ranking.

StalwartVan, RamRod, DRZRAM, Ramfaninblue, Drak, csugrad2000, RAM-I-AM, Southern IL Ram, Three RAM Night, Ohioflyer, sacRAMento, Dodge, rcbb01, Husker Hater, SJ, #27sMrs, Buffalo Century, Aloha Ram, SYKOBUFF, amiCUs CUraie, RammingSpeed, RamStraight, CO_Poke, The Real ROBRAM, On to the Goal, le alpe d huez, SDCARAM, Adopt-O-RAM, Torch, L.A. Rampage, Stalwart Van, I_B_A_Ramfan, RAM-BIL-ON, greenandgold44, Stevebez, ROBORAM, LA Ram, GO STATE, Ram Horns, NYCram, carnero, Boulder Sucks, Idaho Buff, Winston Ram, CSURAMS 10, BeatBoulder, ramAZ, Epoxy Resin Ram, CSU_Hurts_So_Good, michiram, N'Awlins Ram (formerly Bourbon St. Ram), RamGrad, SonnyisGod, Who's Your Rammy?, FORTFUN RAM, CSUFizzer, CHUCK, Rambamthankumam, CB83, Ramalicious, tRAMpledunderfoot, Natedog46, John Riegel, Q.Ram, Buffalo Bob, RAM LOVER, 6exram0.

Keep in mind that we have nearly 3,000 registered posters, and tens of thousands of other people who read the board every month, but choose not to post. So, to be mentioned in this listing of 65 posters (or even on the Honorable Mention list) is quite an accomplishment. You are the best of the best.

Please note: Every now and then, a solid poster who probably should have made the Top 65 (or at least the Honorable Mention list) falls through the cracks as an oversight by the voting committee. For that, we apologize. If you did not make the list, it's likely due to infrequency of posting. There certainly are hundreds of additional posters that were under consideration, but we have to draw the line somewhere. Our advice is, learn from this, let the taste of disappointment settle in your mouth for a while, and set aggressive goals for 2004. It could be the year that you ascend in the charts.

A couple of interesting on posters who plummeted in this year's Rankings...

RAM-I-AM--Champ in 2001, No. 11 in 2002, unranked in 2003. This one was rather expected, as RAM-I-AM admitted a new job would prevent him from posting much this year. However, no one could have expected the near-total absence of RAM-I-AM for much of the 2003. Due to his history with the site, and largely based on past performance, RAM-I-AM still made the Honorable Mention list.

RAM-BIL-ON--No. 5 in 2002, unranked in 2003. Perhaps the biggest surprise of 2003…he seemed like one of the board's hottest commodities, vaulting from a No. 42 in 2001 to No. 5 last year. He was fairly active during the football season, but fell off the face of the earth, it seems thereafter. His disappearance has resulted in a disappearance from the Top 65. He still made the Honorable Mention list, but was a far cry from his 2002 performance.

CSURamFan--No. 6 in 2001, No. 7 in 2002, No. 33 in 2003. His decreased posting has led to a slide in the rankings. CSURamFan had an off-year this year, and appeared to be increasingly perturbed by fellow posters this year. Perhaps that's why he doesn't post as much. He is still the same skeptical CSURamFan, who isn't afraid to differ from the popular opinion. That's a valued trait, and is why he remained near the Top 25, finishing just outside at No. 33.

RAMbler--The original winner of our Awards contest (back when we were on the CSU Ramblings message board), RAMbler's presence has waned significantly. He finished No. 21 in 2001, largely due to his reputation. He then plummeted to No. 51 last year. This year, he's completely off the charts, and is seemingly nowhere to be found.

Babybull--Babybull instantly became one of the site's best posters upon his arrival in the fall of 2001. He shot up the charts to finish No. 5 in his first full year of posting. His regular attendance of practices lent him the ability to give in-depth reports and insights into the program, making him a valuable commodity for Ram fans. However, he since moved to Oklahoma, which makes it a little difficult to attend practices. Nobody would have expected him to completely fall off the table though. He has been a rare sight on the message board this year, and thus did not even make the Honorable Mention list.

Conclusion

Lastly…we just want to thank you all for spending your days and nights with us on RamNation. You are what makes this website so great. Remember to patronize Rams Bookstore and any of our other site sponsors.

Congratulations…and we'll now start compiling our notes for 2004…so be at your best! And don't forget, 2004 will feature the inaugural inductions into the RamNation Hall of Fame.
